Richard Matheson föddes i Allendale, New Jersey 1926 och växte upp i Brooklyn. Efter high school tog han värvning och stred i WWII. 1949 tog han sin BA i journalistik vid Univeristy of Missouri och snart därefter inleddes hans författarbana med publiceringen av novellen Born of Man and Woman i Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction 1950. Mathesons första roman, Someone is Bleeding publicerades 1953. Han har hitills skrivit 28 romaner varav flera – inklusive The Shrinking Man, I Am Legend, What Dreams May Come och Hell House – har filmats med framgång. Han har också skrivit för olika tv-shower, däribland The Twilight Zone och Star Trek.

2010 blev Richard Matheson upptagen i the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
